Overview - Accounting
Our accounting research has an excellent reputation. 100% of our research in the area of business and management, which included accounting, was ranked as either outstanding or as having very considerable impact in the Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021). Many of our research projects are funded by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW) and the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).
Accounting plays an integral role in the stability and development of global economies and financial markets. Through proper oversight and management, accounting can help prevent repeats of the devastating financial crises seen in recent decades.
When you do a postgraduate research degree with us, you'll play your part in investigating how pressing topics in accounting affect people and organisations all over the world.
Overview - Economics
Our Economics research covers resource economics and environmental policy, monetary policy, behavioural and experimental economics, efficiency, productivity, and digital economy.
Economics affects almost every area of our lives, from individual financial decision-making, to global macroeconomic and monetary policy decisions made by governments around the world.
In the aftermath of the 2008 financial crisis, we've used mathematical models and econometric methods to predict how the economy reacts to such events – and how we can prevent them happening again. Our work has helped governments develop more effective monetary policies and better regulate the use of natural resources.
In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2021), 100% of our research in the area of Business and Management Studies, which includes Economics, was ranked as delivering either outstanding or very considerable impact – and when you join us as a postgraduate research student, you'll make your own contribution to our exceptional work.
Overview - Finance
Finance affects almost every aspect of modern society, from the health of the global economy and the wellbeing of individual citizens, to the success or failure of businesses big and small. In the light of recent financial crises, we're working to prevent repeats of such events.
As a postgraduate researcher with us, you could examine the inner workings of financial markets and financial institutions, investigate the new technologies changing the financial sector, or study the upstart financial services challenging the status quo of traditional banking services.
We're busy transforming our knowledge into research that's making an impact, and our work is helping individuals, firms and governments with their financial decision-making. When you study with us for a postgraduate research degree, you'll make your own contribution to our exceptional work.
Careers and opportunities
Once you complete your postgraduate research degree, you'll be a highly-skilled researcher with the knowledge and skills to make an impact in many different industries.
