New for 2014, this four term course offers talented, emerging directors a contemporary and wide-reaching vocational training.
LAMDA has been training directors for almost 20 years and our graduates have gone on to work at the National Theatre, the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Royal Court, the Royal Exchange Theatre, Williamstown Theater Festival and the Young Vic. The success of our training lies in our receptiveness to current industry practice coupled with our commitment to preparing students for all aspects of performance production. This results in visionary and versatile directors who are equipped for sustainable careers in the industry.
Students undertake an intense programme of practical classwork, reflective tutorials and attachments as assistant directors on LAMDA productions, supporting the work of professional practitioners.
CLASSES
Students observe and participate in core LAMDA acting classes – working across the four disciplines of acting, voice, movement, singing, and developing an understanding of the actor’s process. They also receive tuition on pre-production planning skills, text analysis, script preparation, aesthetics and screen & audio training
Midway through their training, our directing students collaborate with our acting students to devise an original piece of theatre, developing their dramaturgical skills. These are presented as workshop performances, which are closed to the public.
PRODUCTIONS
Throughout the course, students undertake a number of assistant director attachments on LAMDA’s public, workshop and short film productions, working with both in-house and visiting directors.
During the third term, they also start pre-production work on their own shows: selecting a play, securing the performance rights and working with a designer. The final term is dedicated to staging these plays, with industry guests invited to watch the final productions in The LAMDA Linbury Studio.
PROFESSIONAL PREPARATION
In addition to extensive production work, students receive masterclasses from visiting playwrights, producers, agents and directors.
