About Artificial Intelligence, MSc - at KU Leuven

Investigating the true nature of intelligence is one of today's most fascinating research avenues. Advances in the study of cognitive processes and models, natural language and perception, human knowledge, representation, and reasoning continue to inspire and challenge our perception of ourselves. One of the scientific community's key research objectives is the development of an intelligent robot. The Master of Artificial Intelligence explores and builds on this challenge, will you?

What's the programme all about?

The programme explores and builds on the fascinating challenge of developing digital systems than can autonomously process, reason and solve complex problems.

For many years, this internationally acclaimed advanced study programme in artificial intelligence has trained students from a variety of backgrounds - including engineering, sciences, economics, management, psychology, and linguistics - in all areas of knowledge-based technology, cognitive science, and their AI applications.

The one-year programme, taught entirely in English, is the result of a collaboration between many internationally prominent research units from seven different faculties of the university. It allows students to focus on engineering and computer science, cognitive science, or speech and language technology.

Programme outline

You can choose from one of three options:

  • Engineering and Computer Science (ECS): intended for students with a background in engineering or exact sciences.
  • Speech and Language Technology (SLT): The central focus is on the processing of natural language, both in its spoken and written form.
  • Big Data Analytics (BDA): BDA trains students in the state of art data analysis techniques, programming techniques and applications that deal with very large data collections.

The ECS and the BDA students have to complete a thesis as part of the programme, while the SLT students follow a traineeship of three months in a research lab or company with R&D activities in language and/or speech technology.
