About Zoo Conservation Biology, MSc - at University of Plymouth

This programme aims to provide the essential knowledge to support scientists working in areas of captive breeding, management of exotic animal species, and wildlife conservation. The programme is jointly delivered by staff of the university and Special featuresJoint development between the University of Plymouth and Paignton Zoo Environmental Park Opportunities for both science graduates and experienced zoo staff Provides a sound basis for career development in zoos and wildlife conservationGeneral programme structureSuccessful management of animal collections for the purpose of education, conservation and wildlife research depends upon professionals who possess a wide range of scientific knowledge and technical skills. Breeding programmes for endangered species are international in scope, so conservation biologists must be able to deal with problems not only at the level of a social group within a particular zoological collection but also at the level of a species globally. This programme provides an opportunity to specialise in a vital area of wildlife conservation. Students will develop the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to manage zoological collections effectively, ensuring that the needs of the animals and the species that they represent are understood and satisfied. The university has an excellent reputation for teaching provision with a flourishing multinational research community. Paignton Zoo Environmental Park has an international reputation, and is involved in research projects based at both the zoo itself and also in Zimbabwe, Kenya and Nigeria. The formal link between the University of Plymouth and Paignton Zoo provides an exciting environment in which students can develop as conservation biologists.Entry requirementsA good honours degree or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Candidates with experience in a relevant area are also encouraged to apply. Overseas students: IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
