The programme does not assume any prior knowledge of environment, development or politics and welcomes applications from candidates who meet the admissions criteria. The knowledge and skills gained in the programme will equip graduates for jobs in international, national and local government and non-governmental organizations, think tanks and consultancies. With international concern escalating as a result of climate change, food price increases and land grabbing, the environmental challenges facing those living in the developing world become ever more complex, multifaceted and immediate. This pathway will enable students to explore the antagonisms and opportunities between environmental sustainability, development and local/national interests in decision making processes. Power and politics at all levels, from local to global, influences environmental conditions and livelihood outcomes.
The programme addresses critical questions, including: Is seeking environmental sustainability compatible with economic and social development? How is access to natural resources mediated by gender and power, and with what implications for the poor? How effective are the organizations and processes of global environmental governance? Do the international climate change negotiations present fair opportunities for all countries to represent their interests and with what implications for progress of the negotiations?
