About French, BA (Hons) - at Trinity College Dublin

French may be studied as one subject in the TSM programme (TR 001), it may be dropped after the third year or continued to fourth year. Final examinations take place either at the end of third year (Moderatorship Part I) or at the end of fourth year (Moderatorship Part II). For full details of all TSM courses, consult the Arts Faculty.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

The course is based on both lectures and small-group teaching. It designed to provide students with a thorough grounding in French, leading to a high standard of fluency in the language, both written and spoken, and a wide knowledge of major aspects of French literature, culture, history and society. The development of presentation skills, reading skills, critical and analytical skills, and essay-writing skills forms an integral part of the course. In the final year, an additional emphasis on research skills is introduced. This is reflected in the requirement for students to prepare a dissertation in French under individual supervision.

STUDY ABROAD

Each year, a number of students spend a year in France, often as assistants in schools, before returning to complete their studies. Some students may opt to spend all or part of their second or third year in a university in France within the framework of a SOCRATES exchange programme. A minimum of two months' stay in a French-speaking country is in any case required of students over the three or four years of the course.
