Depending on your choice of pathway this course leads to Advanced Diploma Nursing Studies – Adult Nursing Advanced Diploma Nursing Studies – Child Nursing Advanced Diploma Nursing Studies – Mental Health Nursing In the first year, you study the core themes relevant to adult, child and mental health nursing. In the second and third years, your learning is specific to your chosen pathway. You study some interprofessional education modules alongside students from other health disciplines, such as radiographers and paramedics. This shared learning experience allows you to develop teamworking and understand the contribution different professionals make. Practice-based learning is central to your development. Typically, you spend 20 weeks a year on clinical placement. Each placement block is supported by University-based training. You have a management placement in your final year which guides your transition from student to registered nurse. On your placements, we assign you a qualified and experienced nurse as a mentor. They support you and make sure you are comfortable in your surroundings, allowing you to make the most of the experience. We base some of our teaching in our modern, £13 million, purpose-built Robert Winston Building on the Collegiate Crescent Campushttp://www.shu.ac.uk/visit/plancollegiate.html. It has teaching rooms that reproduce the work environment of hospitals and other related settings. These contain the latest teaching and clinical equipment and technology. After you graduate you have the clinical nursing knowledge, and the interpersonal and management skills, vital for effective patient care. The advanced diploma has the same content as the BA (Honours) Nursing Studieshttp://prospectus.shu.ac.uk/op_uglookup1.cfm?id_num=651 but without a dissertation. If you gain the advanced diploma and qualify as a nurse you can return and top uphttp://prospectus.shu.ac.uk/CourseEntry.cfm?CourseId=955 your award to a BA (Honours) degree, which will include completing a dissertation. As part of the course you complete a level 2 award in understanding health improvement, which provides you with a certificate from the Royal Society of Public Healthhttp://www.rsph.org.uk/. We are currently the only university in the UK that offers this as part of our healthcare courses.Gain registered nurse status in two yearsIf you already have a degree, you may be able to complete our Postgraduate Diploma Nursing Studies – Adult Nursing or Mental Health Nursinghttp://prospectus.shu.ac.uk/op_pglookup1.cfm?id_num=195. This fast track course leads to registered nurse status in two years.
