About Automotive Engineering, BEng (Hons) - at Sheffield Hallam University
We are looking for people who are motivated, inquisitive and want a challenge. You must want to know why and how things happen, and how things work.
You learn to tackle the problems faced by many companies whose manufacturing processes rely on co-ordinating individual specialists from various engineering disciplines. Our graduates can work across traditional subject boundaries.
You learn the principles and application of
* current mechanical engineering technologies
* engineering design and computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacture
* control and instrumentation technologies
* automotive systems, engines and manufacturing
We also cover business, financial, legal and environmental constraints.
You gain insight into specialist subjects including engineering mechanics, energy and fluid dynamics, and materials technology. These support your knowledge of automobile design and engine technology.
Your first year is common to other engineering courses. This provides a firm base of engineering principles, knowledge and basic skills and means you can change course at the end of the first year if you prefer.
In year three, you can take a year's work placement. This allows you to apply your knowledge to commercial practice while gaining new skills, learning how industry works and earning a salary. We help you find a placement and negotiate a sensible salary.
In your final year, you continue studying general mechanical engineering subjects, with specialist modules in automobile design and production and engine technology. You also complete a major project, which students often integrate with Formula Student.
SHU Racinghttp://www.shu.ac.uk/shuracing/ and Formula StudentFormula Student is an international competition that challenges engineering students to design, build and race a single seat racing car. Students from almost every engineering and technology course make up our SHU Racing team.
If you have an interest in automotive engineering and motor racing you can apply for membership of SHU Racing. Numbers are limited to students with the potential to benefit from the experience and the ability to produce work of a high quality.
SHU Racing develops your personal and technical skills. It gives you valuable business experience as the outcome relies on the performance of every team member.
You work on every part of the project including * design * manufacture * business * liaising with sponsors. This experience increases your value to all types of engineering companies when you graduate.
You may get the chance to drive the current car by taking it to local track events and hill climbs.
The year's high point is the Formula Student competition, which takes place in July. You present the technical design and business plan for your car to motor racing experts and compete your car against other UK and world universities.
