About Fashion Design, MDes - at Sheffield Hallam University

This four year course for enthusiastic, innovative and ambitious designers that combines undergraduate and postgraduate study. We emphasise creativity, concept generation and your personal development. You graduate with a masters degree at the end of four years’ study. This means you have the advantage of the undergraduate fee repayment structure where you don’t start paying back your fees until you are earning above a set limit. This is currently £15,000 a year. Normally you would pay postgraduate course fees when you enrol. The fashion studios and workshops are equipped with state-of-the-art digital facilities, providing a lively and stimulating environment. You also have access to wider University facilities such as laser cutting, photography, printing and other workshop equipment. Study visits to exhibitions and events in London, Paris and New York are a central part of the course. You take part in live projects and national and international competitions. These let you experience working to a professional design brief that closely reflects industry practice. You can go on an industrial placement or international exchange with one of our partner universities in Europe, Asia or Australia. During year three, the postgraduate part of the course begins, which includes taught modules and self-directed study. You work, individually and in teams, to develop the higher level research skills that support your self-directed study and design project work. The taught modules use lectures, workshops and case studies to examine the relationships between creativity, innovation and professionalism. In the final year, you demonstrate your skills and talent by producing a collection of work for your final exhibition. Your portfolio, together with the research, understanding and expertise that supports it, demonstrates your ability to deliver creative and original responses to complex design briefs. It also proves to employers that you can contribute to the strategic management and direction of their business.
