About Journalism, Postgraduate Certificate - at Robert Gordon University

Digital technology is transforming the media landscape. Robert Gordon University aims to equip you with the skills, experience and understanding to build a career in journalism.

That means exploring the role of radio, television, print and online platforms, developing skills and practical experience. We offer two alternative pathways that focus on different aspects of professional practice. You will benefit from staff with expertise in all areas of journalism, broadcasting and communication, as well as from the School's excellent links with the professions.

What you will study

You are expected to attend intensive training in shorthand each day throughout the first two Semesters

Semester 1

  • Journalism Theory and Application

  • News Writing

  • Media Law

  • Journalism


Semester 2

  • Digital Journalism in Practice

  • Portfolio Writing

  • Politics and Public Affairs

  • Fieldwork Placement


Semester 3

  • Journalism Project or Dissertation


You will be expected to sit NCTJ examinations in news writing, law, public affairs and shorthand.

Journalism Project/Dissertation

In Semester 2, you will present a written research proposal for submission. This will normally form the basis for the Masters dissertation. You will work independently but under tutorial supervision, to undertake the research and prepare the project/dissertation.

Entry requirements

The course is ideal for students who possess an undergraduate honours degree in any discipline and plan a professional career in journalism. International students, for whom English is not their first language, must provide evidence of linguistic ability, at IELTS 7.5 or its equivalent. Acceptance is subject to interview and written submission.

Placements and accreditations

The placement consists of four weeks practical experience in the operation of an appropriate organisation.

This course is accredited by the National Council for the Training of Journalists

UK/EU Students

  • New students: £3400 for academic year 2010/11


International Students

  • New students: £8600 for academic year 2010/11
