Malaysia, with its diverse culture, stunning natural beauty, and modern cities, is an attractive destination for international students. The country is home to several high-ranking universities offering a wide range of programs in English, particularly strong in areas such as engineering, business, and information technology. Beyond its educational excellence, Malaysia is known for its friendly people, delicious cuisine, and relatively low cost of living, making it an ideal place for students seeking a quality education in a vibrant environment.
International students planning to study in Malaysia need to apply for a Student Pass, which serves as a student visa. The process typically begins once you have received an offer letter from a Malaysian educational institution. The institution will usually apply for the Student Pass on behalf of the student through the Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) system.
To support your Student Pass application, you will need to provide the following documents:
The fee for the Student Pass application includes a processing fee, visa fee, and the i-Kad fee, which altogether can range from RM 1,000 to RM 2,000 (approximately USD 240 to USD 480), depending on your country of origin and the length of your course.
Upon arrival in Malaysia, students are required to undergo a post-arrival medical screening at a registered clinic or medical centre in Malaysia. Additionally, international students must attend a briefing and registration session with the Immigration Department of Malaysia to complete the process.
Malaysia offers limited work opportunities for international students. With a valid Student Pass, students are permitted to work part-time for up to 20 hours per week during semester breaks or holidays of more than seven days, in specific sectors such as restaurants, petrol kiosks, mini markets, and hotels. Note that work in certain areas, like cashier positions and entertainment centres, is prohibited.
This opportunity allows students to gain work experience, understand the local culture better, and manage their living expenses. After completing their studies, graduates may explore opportunities to extend their stay in Malaysia through employment or further education, subject to the country’s immigration policies at that time.
