Iceland Student Visa Process and Fees for International Students

Non-EU/EEA students planning to study in Iceland for more than three months need to apply for a residence permit for study purposes, as Iceland does not issue traditional student visas. The process begins with securing admission to an Icelandic university. Once you have received your acceptance letter, you must demonstrate that you have sufficient financial resources to support your stay in Iceland. The Directorate of Immigration typically requires students to have at least ISK 180,840 per month to cover living expenses.

To obtain a residence permit, you need to submit the application to the Directorate of Immigration in Iceland, either in person or through a representative in Iceland, providing the following documents:

• A letter of acceptance from the Icelandic university confirming your enrollment in a full-time course
• Proof of sufficient financial means to cover your tuition fees (if applicable) and living expenses for the duration of your stay
• A valid health insurance policy from an Icelandic insurance company or a foreign insurance company authorised to operate in Iceland
• A certificate of criminal record from your home country
• A valid passport and passport-sized photographs

The application fee for a residence permit for studies is ISK 15,000. It is crucial to apply well in advance of your intended start date, as processing times can vary.

Upon arrival in Iceland, students may need to register with the local Registers Iceland to obtain a Kennitala (Icelandic ID number), which is essential for accessing various services and opening a bank account.

Iceland Student Visa Work Regulations

Iceland offers some work opportunities for international students during their studies. Students with a valid residence permit for studies are allowed to work up to 15 hours per week. This provision enables students to gain work experience, improve their language skills, and manage their personal expenses.

After completing their studies, graduates can apply for a residence permit to seek employment if they have found a job relevant to their field of study.
