The history of LIBF

Back in 1879, there were no qualifications for bank workers and few opportunities to progress. United by the need for professional recognition for their skills and experience, a small group of banking professionals set up the first Institute of Bankers in England and Wales, which later became LIBF. Today, LIBF provides students all around the world with everything they need to learn flexibly through online or blended courses and is the only professional body in the world with taught degree awarding powers. They have a global community of students and alumni spanning over 130 countries.

Visa

International students outside of the UK who wish to study a blended learning course at LIBF will need a student visa. This visa also allows you to work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during holidays. This allows you to gain additional income, develop invaluable industry experience and employability skills, and build your professional network in London's strong job market. Once you've completed your blended degree, you can apply for a 2-year graduate visa, which allows you to stay in the UK to look for a job in your field of study.

Life & Culture in the UK

The UK offers a vibrant and diverse culture, with its multicultural cities, landscapes and rich history. London, the site of LIBF's main campus, is a hub for arts, culture, and business. Studying in such a historically diverse city allows students from all over the globe to be integrated into a melting pot of cultures. Furthermore, it enhances your networking sphere via its part-time jobs and graduate roles in one of the world’s leading financial hubs.

Facilities & Campus

Located in the heart of London, LIBF's campus boasts an extensive range of facilities, including modern classrooms, study lounges, Wi-Fi, computers and a library with a wealth of publications. The international and student-friendly setting fosters academic learning and peer interaction, making the LIBF campus a great place to learn and grow.

Health Care

Once you arrive in the UK, it is recommended that you register with a local doctor (General Practitioner or GP). As part of the student visa process, you will be required to pay an immigration health surcharge, which gives you access to the National Health Service (NHS) in the same way UK residents have. This covers most health care, although there can be charges for dental treatment and medicines.

Academic Support

Ensuring your academic success is a cornerstone of LIBF's approach. Their dedicated tutors are always ready to support you, offering guidance to understand complex concepts and overcome study challenges. You'll also have access to their extensive online library services and various resources to enhance your knowledge base. Furthermore, their digital learning platform allows you to learn at a pace and place that suits you, fostering self-paced learning, peer interaction, and direct engagement with tutors.

Find out what students say about London Institute of Banking and Finance

Saajid Patel, Corporate Analyst at HSBC

I decided to study here as I felt that they had excellent links within the financial services industry and had courses that were tailor made for those interested in getting into a career in financial services.

I enjoyed the interactive learning as the class sizes were smaller, therefore it was a lot easier to communicate with the lecturers (who all have a wealth of relevant experience and knowledge within the industry) and ask any questions. I also enjoyed the events and I was involved in the committee responsible for organising these events for a while.

I believe that the knowledge gained and the links that they have within the financial services industry helped me to get my first internship with Barclays. This is turn helped me get my current role with HSBC. It is also interesting knowing that most graduate programs (HSBC for one) send their graduate trainees to The London Institute of Banking & Finance to build up their base knowledge in the financial industry. This meant that I came out a step ahead in terms of my base knowledge, allowing me to kick start my banking career and hit the ground running.

Millie Montague, Securities Analyst at Goldman Sachs

Different to many, I transferred from Mathematics and Finance at City University to study at The London Institute of Banking & Finance, and I am very pleased with my decision. It provided me with all the support I needed during the application season; I attended multiple CV and cover letter workshops with industry professionals, and was encouraged to gain work experience by being offered the Advanced Work Based Learning module.

I began reading the Financial Times, to which the university provide a subscription, and I even started trading myself. This is down to the influence of the students I am surrounded with here – the difference in ambition and industry knowledge is striking.

I have found networking a powerful tool, and having somebody to mention in your cover letter, as well as gain advice from when applying, is so beneficial. The events that they run are a great way to meet people working in the industry, and networking is heavily encouraged. Overall, my degree has been a leap for me and helped me in obtaining my first choice position.
